LAZI DAWG HITS THE WATER AT LAKE OOLOGAH!

I became interested in boats when I was ten years old; so interested that, by the time I was twelve, my grandmother said, "If you don't stop messing about in boats, you'll be a lazy dog." It was true. I have been a lazy dog since. I decided "Lazi Dawg" should be the name of my boat. That is an Oklahoma translation.

My lifelong dream of piloting my own sternwheeler on the Mississippi has succumbed to the realities of age, health and finances. So, I lowered my expectations just a bit.

I built a small sailboat for use on Oklahoma lakes. The design I chose is the "Weekender" by Stevenson Projects. The Weekender is gaff-rigged and has a classic look I find appealing, though I am made some changes in the design. I posted construction photos to show the changes (and some mistakes) I  made.

I am already planning a follow-on project which will be a sailboat about twenty-two feet long suitable for cruising our lakes, rivers and canals. It will also be suitable for some offshore cruising. This boat will be loosely based upon the "Madrigal" by the late John Hawes of Boston, England.

And, of course, I am still working on sternwheeler plans in the off-chance that I might inherit from a rich aunt, publish a best-seller, win the lottery or have Ronald McDonald pour a cup of coffee in my lap.

Check out some of the links on the left for some really nifty boat information. The sternwheeler site even has some pretty good riverboat music. Or try the Willie & Buster Site; it has zillions of pictures, stories and music.
